It's just a small quibble, though - this album confirms the real sense of magic that surrounds this band.įormer Moloko singer Roisin Murphy has teamed up with respected beatmaker Matthew Herbert for her solo debut.
It's hard to find fault with such sweet-natured songs as their single, 'Forever Lost' or the yearning 'Love Me Like You', but there is a regrettable indie spindliness that holds the Magic Numbers back from being truly life-changing. Prime songwriting Number Romeo Stodart is a romantic soul: most songs here pivot on a lover's lament or the kind of boy-girl stuff last heard convincingly from Brian Wilson.

Their debut album is full of rosy-cheeked pop, Sixties harmonies and tremulous charm. And make no mistake, the Numbers are big on twinkle. The Magic Numbers are four: two sets of siblings (real ones) who have gone from family singalongs to most-loved new band status in the twinkling of an eye. Having satisfied the moshpit with CD1, CD2 is an engaging step sideways for one of rock's most reliable performers. He penned 'Friend Of A Friend', when he'd just moved in with his unfamiliar new bandmate, Kurt Cobain. Key tracks here include a duet with Norah Jones and a stark track Grohl has been sitting on for over a decade.
CD2, meanwhile, plays host to a stream of guests and showcases Grohl's rarely seen but pleasurable acoustic side. Grohl gets to holler and surge, as he easily knocks off the kind of tuneful slabs of guitar most bands never master in their lifetimes. The Foos' fifth record is a double album of extremes. And now Dave Grohl - moved, in part, by his experiences following John Kerry on the campaign trail last year - has taken stock. When Nirvana's last drummer formed his own band, few were expecting it to corner the market in melodic hard rock, and to last over 10 years. But he remains a soothing pop stylist, sinuously suggesting on his 13th album that the planet is a confused but wonderful place. Eno's days actively pioneering the avant-garde and electronic movements may have passed too. There are moments where you do wince, like when a vocoder intrudes on 'Passing Over'. The mid-section is particularly user-friendly, with songs like 'How Many Worlds' easily marrying Eno's trademark mellifluous oscillations to tunes. It's Eno's most song-based record for some time, big on melody and even lyrics. But although Another Day On Earth is filled with amniotic washes of sound and concern for the state of things, this is no vapid chillout record. This is, of course, where you will find a great many other works by evergreen polymath Brian Eno. Happily, someone thought to include another version of '1 Thing', with rapper Eve, at the end to jolt everyone back to life.Īlbums with 'earth' in the title should be eyed with some suspicion, particularly when filed in the ambient section. As Touch wears on, however, it hits ballad mode and interest levels wane. There's nothing else quite as exquisite as '1 Thing', unfortunately, but 'Come With Me' has a highly strung hook and elsewhere other producers keep Amerie well supplied with nice noises. Amerie's second album benefits from Harrison's loyalty, with his hysterically-pitched fairy dust sprinkled on half the tracks here. Before Harrison launched Beyoncé's solo career, he earned his stripes on the first Amerie record, which established the R&B singer in the US in 2002. Both came from the same tunesmith, Rich Harrison. Beyoncé's 'Crazy in Love' single destroyed all in its path the sublime '1 Thing' by Amerie has already set its stamp indelibly on this year.
